Slater Builders to Deliver New Athletics, Activity Center

NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF. (JUNE 2, 2021) – Our Lady Queen of Angels (OLQA) parish and school community in Newport Beach is about to make a longtime dream a reality as Slater Builders constructs its new 11,000-square-foot athletics and activities center.

Pre-construction for the $6.8 million center commenced in early 2018, with the project breaking ground this past March. Slater Builders finished pouring the concrete on this new facility last week, and the project remains on track to open in early 2022.

When completed, the parish and Catholic school will have full use of a regulation basketball court, two volleyball courts, a performance stage, meeting rooms, offices, a lobby, plaza areas, restrooms, a concession stand and storage areas. The facility was designed by Kluger Architects of Los Angeles.

The new building will not only host athletic endeavors, but ministry, performing arts and school-related events as well. These include concerts, faith-formation events, and pep rallies and Christmas programs for the school. Father Steve Sallot, the pastor at Our Lady Queen of Angels, blessed the site of the new center in March, distributing Holy Water along its perimeter.

“Our parish and school community are excited as we take another great step in developing our Campus Master Plan, which was envisioned many years ago,” said Fr. Sallot. “With this new facility, we can better support our student activities and athletics. Our families and students are really looking forward to this expansion.”

The center will be able to accommodate about 500 people, including athletic teams and spectators. OLQA’s sports are currently held outside on asphalt, making this new facility especially useful during hot and inclement weather.

“When we heard OLQA was actively looking to construct their long-awaited sports and activities center, we knew we wanted to be involved,” said Mike Kearon, COO and Principal of Slater Builders. “Our Lady Queen of Angels has been a pillar of the Newport Beach and larger Orange County communities, and we can’t think of a better way to say thank you than to roll up our sleeves and provide them with this much-needed new facility.”

Our Lady Queen of Angels parish was established in Corona del Mar in 1961 before moving to its current Newport Beach location off Jamboree Road and Eastbluff Drive in 1964. For the past 60 years it has been the parish of choice for many long-time South Orange County residents.

OLQA’s school was also established in 1964. The school is under the supervision of the Department of Catholic Education of the Diocese of Orange.
