UCI Landscape Enhancement &
Mesa Court Units – Design/Build

UCI Landscape Enhancement: The prescriptive requirement of this project as directed by UCI was to design and construct a new entry plaza to the Claire Trevor School of Arts between the Scene Shop and Robert Cohen Theater.

Slater Builders partnered with Valleycrest Design Group to develop an attractive, engaging and cohesive campus plaza with continuity and connectivity to the exiting surrounding area.

The project included a clear and distinguishable entrance through the integration of hardscape features such as sandblasted concrete steps and colored seat walls, planting areas with a low-water demanding palette, efficient irrigation systems with low-water application capabilities, site drainage and integral site lighting.

Our main enhancement that set us apart for all other design/build teams was the vertical illuminated canvas sculpture that established a focal point within the plaza. Furthermore, the new landscape and irrigation components incorporated UCI’s GREEN and GOLD Plan with plantings that were environmentally suitable and more sustainable.

UCI Mesa Court: Units 1-2: The scope of this project as mandated by UCI was to design/build the renovation of nine (9) Unit 1 buildings in the Mesa Court Housing Complex.

Slater Builders partnered with Carrier Johnson to design, remodel, and upgrade the restrooms, including a complete waterproofing system on floors and walls, new tile, cubbies, fixtures and lighting, new roof system,  upgrades to the plumbing, fire suppression, electrical and fire alarm systems, new drywall ceilings and walls in the bedrooms, restrooms and corridors, exit lighting, exterior lighting, paint and floor covering.

Some of the enhancements included counter sensors on the restroom doors to control lighting, a combination single unit water bottle filling station in each building, and skylights in the 2nd floor bathrooms.

Behind each Unit 1 kitchen on the second floor, the non-utilized storage closet was relocated turning single occupancy rooms into double occupancy units which created space for nine additional beds.

“The Slater Builders/Carrier Johnson design build team accomplished the Mesa Court Renovation, Units 1 & 2 under difficult schedule constraints to meet the University’s needs. Moreover, the design build team’s creativity and close coordination with the University allowed for the inclusion of other upgrades too numerous to list, but which improve the quality of student life and extend the building’s life cycle. We heartily thank Slater Builders and Carrier Johnson + CULTURE for their work on this highly successful project”.
