California Coastal Commission Approves Plans for Long Beach Yacht Club Renovation and Expansion

Press Release – Long Beach, CA – Sept. 15, 2025 | Cindy Wasserman cwasserman@michaelgraves.com

Architectural plans for the Long Beach Yacht Club’s modernization and expansion have been approved by the California Coastal Commission in a recent 10-1 vote. Located on the southeast corner of Naples Island on Alamitos Bay in Long Beach, California, the Long Beach Yacht Club was established in 1929, and is recognized as a leading club in the international yachting community for its commitment to excellence in yacht racing and innovation in race management.

The state approval allows the club to move ahead with its new poolhouse and remodel of its main 21,000-square-foot clubhouse. The design by Michael Graves, headed by Architects Michael Kollin and Brian Husting, will increase the building’s total size to 41,000 square feet. The addition will include the replacement of its aging pool storage cabanas with a useable 20,000-square-foot poolhouse building complete with a new pool and deck, lobby and two multi-purpose rooms. Major renovations to the existing two-story clubhouse—built in the 1960’s—will include upgrading the dining areas, bar, lounge, kitchen, meeting rooms, library, offices, and terraces. Already approved by the City of Long Beach Planning Commission, the project addresses the environmental, transportation, and operational considerations required by the Coastal Act.

“We’re excited to help create an inviting and efficient gathering place for club members, the boating community, and neighborhood/coastal groups,” stated Michael Kollin, Principal at Michael Graves’ LA studio. The revitalized club will provide a vibrant pathway to the water and bring a new era of excellence to this Long Beach landmark that has served the community for nearly 100 years.

In addition to hosting numerous local, national, and international yachting events including the Congressional Cup, the club offers “learn to sail” programs to the community, and its member families enjoy a year-round calendar of social, yachting, and junior activities at its clubhouse. Construction is expected to begin by late summer 2026.
