Every great transformation begins with the right team — and Sherman Library & Gardens is proud to partner with Costa Mesa’s own Slater Builders to bring the Grow the Gardens project to life.
Founded right here in Orange County, Slater Builders has a long tradition of excellence, community service, and craftsmanship. As a family-owned firm with deep local roots, they’ve built an impressive portfolio of projects across the region — from education and nonprofit facilities to cultural and community landmarks. Their work reflects not only technical expertise but also a genuine commitment to enhancing the communities they serve.
For Sherman Library & Gardens, this community connection and prior work at Sherman made Slater Builders the ideal choice. Their team understands how to honor Sherman’s history, protect its living collections, and create space for future growth — a vision that sits at the heart of this project.
“Slater Builders is thrilled to be a part of the Grow the Gardens Project,” says Dana Odell, Project Manager. “We take pride in supporting the vision of the original founder as the gardens transition into the next generation of Sherman Library & Gardens!”
Slater Builders is no stranger to Sherman Library & Gardens. Their relationship began more than a decade ago, when they completed improvements to the Tropical Conservatory and handled important code upgrades to the public restrooms. In 2020, they once again partnered with Sherman — this time to support leadership and Gensler Architects with pre-construction services, including infrastructure assessments and early cost evaluations to help shape the Grow the Gardens plans.
That long-standing collaboration has laid the foundation for a seamless transition into this next phase. Slater Builders is currently finalizing pricing for the construction plans and will begin preparing the site in November. This early work will include adjustments to utilities and access pathways to ensure Sherman remains open and welcoming throughout the project. Full construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026, marking an exciting new chapter in our ongoing partnership.
With their thoughtful approach, attention to detail, and dedication to collaboration, Slater Builders is helping Sherman ensure that the construction process reflects the same care and beauty that define the gardens themselves.
As the work progresses, we’re excited to watch this partnership blossom — a true reflection of how local expertise and shared values help Sherman Library & Gardens continue to grow, inspire, and enrich our community.
